THE FOLLOWING IS A VERMILION COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY’S RELEASE
People v. Warren Montgomery 2023-CF-469
On February 26, 2025, Warren Montgomery (DOB: 10/19/1997), formerly of Urbana, Illinois, pleaded guilty to Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapon – Felon, a class 2 felony, for a sentence of 8 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. The plea and sentencing were presided over by Judge Karen Wall. Montgomery will serve 1 year of mandatory supervised release following his prison sentence.
The People presented evidence that on July 16, 2023, an officer with the Danville Police Department observed a Gold Volkswagen Tiguan with no rear lights on the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer noticed the passenger inside reaching near the center console. The Officer identified the driver, but the passenger refused to identify himself. The driver had a valid driver’s license and a Firearm Owners Identification card, and indicated there was a firearm in the vehicle. The driver also stated a magazine was in the glove box. The driver consented to a search of the vehicle to ensure the firearm was properly stored. The officer located a magazine and a Taurus G3C 9mm handgun that did not belong to the driver. The Taurus G3C belonged to the passenger. The passenger was eventually identified as Warren Montgomery, who had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in Court, as well as a prior conviction for Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons.
State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said, “This case shows the crucial role police officers play in keeping our community safe. The diligence of this Danville Police officer during a traffic stop helped to remove an illegal firearm from the street and we were able to hold another repeat offender accountable. My office will continue to work with police in our community to protect the good People of Vermilion County and to uphold the law.”
