THE FOLLOWING IS A VERMILION HERITAGE FOUNDATION RELEASE
A Letter to Our Community |
| One year ago this month, the future of the Fischer Theatre was uncertain. In the months prior, the Board had many long and emotionally taxing meetings, discussing the future of the organization. Hard decisions had to be made, and we had to be the ones to make them.
At that time, the Fischer was facing significant financial challenges, losing between $9,000 and $11,000 each month. Difficult conversations were taking place, including the very real possibility of going dark by the fall of 2025. As Board President, I had a choice; to step back, or to step forward. I chose to step forward. Transitioning into the role of Executive Director was not without its challenges. It came with questions, skepticism, and, at times, criticism. Understandably so. But through it all, one thing remained clear to me: the Fischer Theatre is worth fighting for. This theatre is more than a building. It is a symbol of Danville’s history, creativity, and potential. It deserves leadership that is willing to do the hard work, not just when things are easy, but especially when they are not. Over the past year, that work has been steady and intentional. Today, we are operating from a position of financial stability with a solid operating model and cash reserves. Our programming has grown not only in volume, but in style and diversity, bringing more opportunities for our community to gather, experience the arts, and connect. Behind the scenes, we have completed critical improvements to strengthen the foundation of this organization for the long term including the Terry Lake Café and the restoration of the historic gift shoppe (both will be opening this month)! Most importantly, we have built a team that cares deeply about this mission. Royce Berry, Andrew Dudich, Lauren Powell, and Taelor Abner are leading our events and operations with energy, creativity, and commitment. Their work is a major reason for the momentum you see today. None of this happens in isolation. It happens because a community chooses to believe in something and show up for it. Whether you’ve attended an event, volunteered your time, sponsored a program, or simply shared encouragement…thank you. I could cry reflecting on the amount of phone calls that came at just the right time. The words of encouragement, hugs, and incoming donations that lifted my spirits when the weight of leadership was just so heavy. We are not finished. In many ways, we are just getting started. Our board is strong. Our staff is motivated. Our volunteers are dependable. As we look ahead, one of our next major initiatives will be a campaign to replace the theatre’s seating, an investment that will improve comfort, accessibility, and the overall experience for every guest who walks through our doors. We are committed to honoring the historic character of the Fischer while making thoughtful upgrades that serve today’s audience, and we will launch this campaign on June 1. We are also beginning the renovation below the stage to accommodate touring artists with dressing rooms, bathrooms, and green room space. We expect this to take some time with the project extending into 2027. The past year has been about stabilizing and rebuilding. The next chapter is about elevating and expanding. The Fischer Theatre belongs to this community. Thank you for being part of this journey and for your overwhelming support.
