The National Weather Service has confirmed there were two EF-1 tornadoes which struck parts of Vermilion County Thursday evening (June 11, 2026). A team from the Weather Service which surveyed damage in the county on Sunday estimated 250 trees were snapped or damaged by winds up to 110 miles per hour in the Kickapoo State Recreation Area northwest of Danville.
An EF1 tornado largely paralleled Interstate 74 to the north. It started just west of Fithian and tracked 13.6 miles with a maximum width of 100 yards. Some outbuildings were significantly damaged near the start of the track, but the greatest damage was in the Kickapoo State Recreation Area. The tornado lifted along Hungry Hollow Road, just before moving into Danville. Damage in Danville itself was determined to be from straight-line winds of 80 to 100 miles per hour. The tornado was on the ground for 14 minutes according to the survey team – from 7:39 until 7:53 p.m.

The second tornado which struck in Vermilion County Thursday evening was in the Hoopeston-Cheneyville area. It was also an EF1 tornado with estimated wind speeds of 110 miles per hour. It touched down southwest of Hoopeston at 7:44 p.m. causing some destruction along a path for 8 minutes as it skirted the south edge of Hoopeston crossing Illinois route one, then Illinois route nine heading towards Cheneyville. Trees and shingles were damaged along the south edge of Hoopeston. Down the road an outbuilding was flattened, and several additional trees were snapped.
As the twister entered Cheneyville it snapped additional tree trunks, and significant damage to buildings at the intersection of Illinois route 9 and 1900 East Road was likely due to rear-flank downdraft winds up to 100 miles per hour. The tornado appears to have lifted before reaching the Indiana border.
There were no injuries reported as the storms moved through Vermilion County.
