A load of percussion sounds were in the air Friday afternoon (July 10th), as over 100 District 118 students performed for their families in the Meade Park Elementary gymnasium. It was the final day of the District 118 Fine Arts Camp. District 118 Fine Arts Facilitator Brian Klett said that thanks to state grants received by District 118, all students were able to attend the camp for free. There were opportunities to do some artwork; but the three major categories were movement, music, and one other important one that Klett mentioned.
AUDIO: Social and emotional learning. Just teaching the kids how to deal with their emotions, learning how to deal with situations; those kinds of things.

Klett says being able to bring in area high school students as counselors, many of them who have teaching ambitions, is always a big help
AUDIO: We had 12 counselors. Yes, a lot of the counselors would love to be teachers. They have to go through an interview process. We interviewed them, then we hand picked them. And they basically were coming here to help with the camp.

Klett says this was the fifth year of the District 118 Fine Arts Camp, usually held in July. Klett says letters about next year’s camp will probably go out with District 118 students around the first of May.
