Downtown Danville’s now traditional August FIRST FRIDAYS event “Science in the City” brought out kids, adults, and families Friday night (Aug 7th). It’s meant to build up enthusiasm for the coming school year; but also, like all First Fridays events, to give families a good time. With the live band going strong, CIMG spoke with Danville Community Development Administrator Rheanna Pierce; who says this event, especially, is a team effort.
AUDIO: Every single year “Science in the City” is growing. It’s cool to see how many people are interested in science in general. And then, how many people get out here like, DACC, the fire department, the U of I; everybody’s out here to support science.
And that includes animal science, as Racheal Anderson from the Vermilion County Conservation District was encouraging youngsters to pet her snake.
AUDIO: He is a gopher snake, a kind of bull snake. Not one that we would have around here. He’s more from Northern Illinois. But he’s super cool. He’s got a bright red, bright yellow checkerboard pattern. He would only ever bite this food; which is mice and rats; and gophers, of course. So he takes care of those sometimes pesky creatures for us, and he does a great job.
Local insurance agent Ross Webb was helping with the sale of 50-50 tickets to support First Fridays events. He says if you’re not a regular at First Fridays events, become one!
AUDIO: I will tell you, Danville more that any place I’ve lived in the world, offers more to their citizens as far as things to do and community involvement. If you’ve got kids, you’ve got to bring them out to this stuff. It’s fantastic.
