DANVILLE — A memorial softball game has been set for Saturday in honor of a former Danville High School coach, teacher and athletic director.
The high school’s Key Club is hosting the softball game at 6 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Clyde Osborn Field to raise money for a memorial scholarship in memory of Gary Gritton, who died last year.
Prior to the game, there will be a home run derby at 5 p.m., and concessions including pork-chop sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be open at American Legion Post 210.
A percentage of the concessions proceeds will also go toward the Gary Gritton Memorial Scholarship Fund, helping continue Gritton’s legacy of supporting students in the community.
“All the proceeds that we make (from the game and derby) will go toward that fund,” said Steve Riopell, a Danville High math teacher and adviser for the Key Club and National Honor Society. “Last year, we were able to hand out two $1,000 scholarships to deserving DHS seniors, and we hope to continue to hand out scholarships for many years to come.”
