Sparky Songer was a former POW who served in WWII, as well as in the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.
Songer is also remembered for his efforts to make the Vermilion County War Museum possible, by collecting cans and other items to help pay for the building, the old Danville Public Library, that became the Vermilion County War Museum.
