Tuesday evening’s (Oct 27) Danville City Council Public Services Committee meeting had a Public Works item on the agenda. Resolutions were forwarded to the full City Council concerning a funding agreement for construction improvements on two Voorhees Street bridges. As Deputy Director of Public Works Tim Cowan told CIMG afterwards, this involves a pair of bridges right around the area where Voorhees Street becomes Lynch Road.
AUDIO: They Cross Lick Creek and the East Fork to Lick Creek. They’re two of our kind of highest condition concerning bridges; and the city got Illinois State Bridge Program funding to help offset the cost of this, to the tune of 80% federal dollars, versus 20% city dollars. And that money is coming through now, and the projects are ready to roll.
Cowan says bids will likely be going out in November, with the first of the two bridges getting worked on starting next spring; and the other the following construction season.
AUDIO: One of the bridges is going to be “rehabilitation;” so it’s generally deck removal and replacement. The other one is “full reconstruction.”
Cowan pointed out that these repairs will be especially useful when the city is able to bring new business to the old Quaker Oats and Heatcraft site.
