City of Danville officials announced the city has been awarded a $12,000 Creative Project Grant from the Illinois Arts Council to restore and revitalize the Lindley Sign Post Forest in downtown Danville, across from the Fischer Theatre.
The Lindley Sign Post Forest was originally created as part of Danville’s Walldogs mural project almost two decades ago.
The forest features 87 signs pointing to communities and destinations from around the world, each contributing to the story of the special attraction, according to city officials.
The Lindley Sign Post Forest honors Danville native Carl K Lindley, a U.S. Army G.I. who, in 1942, placed a sign pointing toward his hometown of Danville. His sign remains part of the display, carrying forward a story of hometown pride that has endured for generations, city officials state.
After years of exposure to the elements, the Lindley Sign Post Forest is ready for a new chapter. As part of the project, existing signs will be reused whenever possible, with signs needing additional attention recreated by downtown Danville’s LAF Design and Art Studio.
The revitalized site will feature new posts, new signs, an updated layout and an ADA-accessible bench and concrete pad, creating a welcoming place for residents and visitors to sit, reflect and honor Lindley’s story and the connection we all share with the places we call home, city officials continued.
The update is anticipated to be completed in spring 2027. Following completion, applications will open for individuals interested in adding a sign to the sign post forest, allowing it to continue growing for generations to come, according to the city.
