Students from the Georgetown-Ridge Farm FFA Chapter were on hand in Springfield Tuesday for the 50th annual Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day. Senator Scott Bennett (D-Champaign) welcomed the students and their advisor, Justin Howard….
Bennett is chairman of the Illinois Senate Agriculture Committee.
The day-long event was organized by the Illinois Department of Agriculture. It provides groups the opportunity to speak with legislators about industry-related issues as well as educate lawmakers about their own agri-business and role in the community.
‘’I try to be a voice for the agriculture industry in the General Assembly because of its importance to our state,’’ said Senator Bennett. He added it was rewarding to see the groups get involved with elected officials.
The Illinois FFA members and their instructors assemble and deliver to lawmakers baskets filled with agricultural products. It is done to remind legislators about the various aspects of agriculture in Illinois and the impacts their decisions make on the world of agriculture.
