Well, the Danville Public Library may have re-opened to patrons today. But don’t forget the old Public Library, right next door on North Vermilion, which is now the Vermilion County War Museum.
As museum board of directors president Jim Kouzmanoff reminds us, they were closed in January for remodeling and new exhibits. And actually, they’re still working on that. But the great news is that donations come in to the Vermilion County War Museum from people all over the country, and all over the world.

AUDIO: One thing we’re working on right now: preliminary work is being done in the Medal of Honor Room. And we’re planning on doing a major remodel there, because we’ve received a major gift that came from an individual in the state of Texas. We’ve had some unusual contributions to things here, and not just financial. We had a fellow from North Carolina drive here just to give us something. We’ve had people from California, it’s amazing. We had a donation that came from France. He didn’t come here, but he found us on the internet.
If you’d like a great story, ask about the ham radio display, and the story of how when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, and all communications equipment was being confiscated, a ham radio operator in Kuwait put all his old stuff out, but the Iraqi soldiers did not realize he had some newer stuff in his basement. He began sending signals about what was going on to a ham radio operator; in Urbana.
The Vermilion County War Museum is open 10 to 4 Saturdays, and Noon to 4 Tuesdays through Fridays.
