It’s a been a beautiful week of sunny days and clear nights, but now, just in time for Fourth of July Weekend, there may be some rain and storms hanging around. That is good news, though, for the farmers.
As Tom Fricke from the Vermilion County Farm Bureau reminds us, most of the county is considered in moderate drought conditions right now. And a simple, quick shower really doesn’t help much. It’s better to have a solid rainfall hitting lots of the county.
AUDIO: That pop-up shower that came through Saturday evening hit some of the county; not all of the county. And, the pop-up showers; they help the areas that it hits; but they aren’t widespread enough to provide overall relief from the dry conditions.
As for how the corn and soybeans look right now, you might be on one road where everything looks a strong, dark green; then on another where things look weaker and a lighter green. Fricke says calling the current situation “hit and miss” is just about right.
AUDIO: Some guys may have been worried they might not be able to get it in in a timely fashion. So they might have put the crop in the ground in less than ideal conditions, as we were delayed with the planting; that can impact the crop as it grows. There are always opportunities for it to catch up and make up lost ground, but you need the right conditions for that to happen.
Right now, thunderstorms could possibly arrive sometime during the day on Friday.
