THE FOLLOWING IS A VERMILION COMMUNITY RESTORATION RELEASE
DANVILLE, IL – (November 30, 2023) –Vermilion Community Restoration (VCR), formerly known collectively as Danville Rescue Mission is pleased to announce significant updates and achievements since its rebranding. As a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the homeless population in Vermilion County, VCR continues to provide essential resources and support to those in need through its shelters and thrift store.
With 19.7% of Vermilion County residents living in poverty, VCR recognizes the urgent need to address homelessness and provide necessities to those experiencing housing insecurity. Since the rebranding, VCR has seen an outpouring of support from individuals, businesses, and churches who share the vision of transforming lives and giving hope to the houseless community.
“We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support we have received from the community,” says Felix Valezquez, Director of VCR Men’s Shelter. “Their generosity allows us to make a tangible difference in the lives of those facing homelessness.”
Recent contributions have made a significant impact on VCR’s facilities and programs. The Indianola Methodist Church in Indianola, IL hosted its annual chili supper and bake sale raising funds for VCR, highlighting the community’s dedication to the cause. Additionally, Battle Focus Ministries, New Jerusalem Church with the Word of Life, all in Danville, IL, donated a stove and dryer respectively to the VCR Women and Children’s Shelter.
VCR acknowledges the Lakeview Nurses for hosting a pumpkin carving party at the women’s shelter, providing a joyful experience for the residents and their children. Christine Cooper, Director of the VCR Women and Children’s Shelter, expresses her gratitude, stating, “These acts of kindness remind our residents that they are not alone, and there is hope for a brighter future.”
VCR is proud to share several success stories, including six women, both with and without children, who have been able to transition into their own homes through employment opportunities and support from VCR. At the men’s shelter, a new intake process has been implemented, starting with a critical question: “Why did you come here?” This allows clients to assess their situation and create an action plan for emotional, financial, and spiritual stability. Weekly follow-ups and a planned exit date further support their journey towards self-sufficiency.
Recognizing the importance of mental health in the healing process, VCR welcomes licensed counselors and therapists to volunteer their services. By addressing past traumas, challenging negative self-beliefs, and teaching positive coping strategies, VCR aims to empower individuals to achieve sustainable outcomes.
VCR continues to provide public community meals for individuals facing food and financial insecurity. These meals are available Monday to Saturday at 12:30 PM and 5:30 PM, and on Sundays and holidays at 3:00 PM. As the holiday season approaches, VCR is also preparing for its annual Christmas Party, an event that celebrates the lives of its clients. Donations and volunteers are warmly welcomed to make this event memorable and uplifting.
