ABOVE: Cause of fire at 839 John Street is being investigated.
Within 13 hours, the Danville Fire Department battled fires at two Danville houses. The first, Tuesday (Jan 16th) evening at 7:10 PM, was at 839 John Street. The second, Wednesday (Jan 17th) morning at 8:08 AM, was at 1003 Kingdom Street.
In the John Street incident, a pet was rescued from a fire in a one-story occupied home with a basement. Upon arrival, firefighters found a large amount of smoke and fire coming from the rear of the structure. At that point, the occupant of the home was already outside with a dog. Firefighters were told a cat was still in the house. The fire was brought under control, and the cat was located and removed. Both the occupant and cat were treated at the scene. Although there were smoke detectors present, none were determined to be working. The occupant stated she was alerted to the fire by the dog barking.
Danville Mass Transit brought a warming bus for the firefighters at the scene. Firefighters remained at the location until 8:43 PM. There were no injuries, and the cause is under investigation. Losses are estimated to be $15,000.
In the Kingdom Street incident, firefighters arrived to find a heavy fire on the front porch of the 1.5 story occupied, wood-framed residence. The fire was extending up into the attic space of the home. Seven family members (five adults and two children), along with two dogs and a cat, were displaced by the fire. All had evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes, and the Red Cross was notified to assist the family. Firefighters were on the scene until 10:06 AM.
There were no injuries, and the cause is being investigated. Damages are estimated to be $12,500; and there were no working smoke detectors present at the time of the fire. The cause is under investigation.
