Although the recent battle against a still unknown dogs’ respiratory illness is pretty much over, big time hurdles remain at the Vermilion County Animal Shelter on Catlin-Tilton Road. Director Kasey Snyder says they are around the 100 mark when it comes to available dogs right now. So many of them simply need new homes. And then of course, new puppy litters are also a factor. Snyder says, please call 217-431-2660 if you have any interest in adopting a dog or providing foster care for an animal. And there is a special deal going on through the middle of May.
AUDIO: We’ve just had a lot of owner surrenders. And a lot of stray dogs coming in that nobody’s come to look for. We desperately need adopters and fosters. Currently, we do have an adoption promotion going on. All adoptions are free. They’re paid for from the BISSELL Pet Foundation.
Yes, there are plenty of cats available as well. And also even some bunnies and guinea pigs. As you can imagine, space is extremely limited right now at the shelter. And Snyder says they hope to know soon what the recommendation is from an animal shelter consultant working with the County Board. There’s been talk of perhaps building a whole new shelter, or maybe a partial new shelter and keeping some of the current one. But Snyder says, one way or another, they need a plan.
AUDIO: Either way, we just need to get something moving. So, we’ll get that report back soon and then make some decisions, hopefully. It literally should be any day that I should be getting that in my hands.
The consultant is Shelter Planners of America out of Arlington, Texas.
