With a $3 million grant from the state needing to be spent by the end of this calendar year, the Danville City Council has given approval to $4.3 million in downtown revitalization work along Walnut, Hazel, Harrison, and Madison streets. This will include storm sewer work, curb and sidewalk updates, and lighting improvements.
In his last Danville City Council meeting as City Engineer, Sam Cole said this is a major step forward.
Downtown Revitalization Phase 1 will include work on north-south streets Walnut and Hazel, as well as east-west streets Harrison and Madison.
AUDIO: We’re trying to make this a downtown that you can walk around again, the way downtown’s supposed to be. Where it’s accessible to people, there’s reason to open a business, you can park in one spot; get around, the lighting’s better. That’s it’s the “Downtown Revitalization Phase 1.” There’s more to come. It’s not going to be my story, but somebody else’s.
Cole says once the work gets going; the north-south streets, Walnut and Hazel, will be one lane streets. But for the east-west roads, Harrison and Madison, it will be access only as needed to local businesses.
