The Vermilion County Animal Shelter has announced that they are remaining closed for taking in any new animals or for adoptions until next Monday, June 17th. It was last week that the shelter closed after multiple groups of puppies began to show signs of Canine Parvovirus, a very contagious viral disease that causes acute gastrointestinal illness in puppies. Older dogs are also capable of catching this virus.
Since last week, all the puppies the shelter has been treating have responded very well to treatment, and should recover. Meanwhile, the shelter is offering a $12 Parvovirus vaccine to any dog who needs it. And if $12 is out of reach for some, they will work with you.
During this closure, shelter personnel have been doing their best to try and contain this disease as much as possible. If you’d like to support the shelter; please consider donating cleaning supplies such as bleach, dish soap, paper towels; and canned puppy and kitten food as well.
The recovering dogs will be available for adoption by late next week, which will allow the shelter to take in dogs that their pet owners are surrendering for one reason or another. The shelter continues to offer support and alternatives to pet owners considering surrender of their dogs; along with the constant effort to find more adopters and foster homes.
Meanwhile, the shelter continues to wait on a final evaluation on the possibility of a new or partial new animal shelter in Vermilion County; along with trying to get their air conditioning fully repaired for this weekend’s expected hot weather.
