A special 5K run/walk event is set for this coming Saturday morning (June 29th), starting and ending at Bismarck-Henning Rossville-Alvin High School. The DG5K is in memory of Dwayne Gettleman, who passed away of pancreatic cancer in 2001. His son Kody Gettleman, a Danville firefighter, wanted to do something that would both honor his dad, as well as support area Boy Scout Troops; and this event began last year.
Kody Gettleman says his father was known as an electrician throughout the area, but he was also known as a Boy Scout leader.

AUDIO: So he was a Boy Scout growing up. And then when I was of age, I got into the scouting. And that was just something that; I have the best memories with him, from all of the scout camps. He was my troop leader for so many years.
Gettleman says there’s no cost to participate in Saturday’s DG5K, with freewill donations being accepted. He says last year over $2,500 ended up being raised. And this year they have a head start with a raffle added to the mix, making sure scout troops around Vermilion County have what they need.
AUDIO: Just with uniforms, any kind of equipment, the stuff for merit badges, education stuff for merit badges; whatever they need, they can use the money on. This year, we’re doing a special raffle. With that money we’ve already raised over $1,700.
Gettleman says registration begins at 8 AM Saturday morning, at the BHRA High School softball fields. The event begins at 9, with a trip into the Bismarck community, before winding back to the finish at the softball fields.
