For the first time in four months, statistics from the Illinois Department of Employment Security are showing a step backwards for the overall jobs picture in Vermilion County. The latest numbers show Vermilion County’s unemployment rate increasing from 5.3% in April to 5.6% in May. Vermilion County’s rate was 5.5% in May of 2023.
Meanwhile, the City of Danville’s rate held steady. Danville shows an unemployment rate of 6.2% for both April and May, as well as a rate of 6.2% for May of last year.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the latest numbers have not been seasonally adjusted.
Also in Vermilion County, total non-farm employment showed an increase of 100 jobs from May of 2023 to May of 2024. Looking at specific categories: Private Education and Health Services were up by 300 jobs, while Government, Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities, and Retail Trade all showed gains of 100 jobs.
On the negative side: Manufacturing had dropped by 300 jobs from one year ago, while Professional Business Services and Wholesale Trade both showed decreases of 100 jobs.
