Tommy B recently welcomed Danville’s Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr and Community Relations Administrator Rheanna Ollis on D102’s “The Big Show.” The topic was the city’s YOU DECIDE WHAT’S POSSIBLE campaign. And one thing Mayor Williams mentioned was that while Danville residents might sometimes focus too much on what their city doesn’t have or used to have, outside residents are going to be more focused on what it has now.
As an example, the mayor cited a west coast couple that decided to relocate in Danville, and what that couple has said to him.
AUDIO: The husband told me, he was like; “Man, I was spending two hours a day, in traffic, driving back and forth to work.” And he was like “I was spending more than one work day basically in the car.” And he said, “I just hated it.” And they were paying an outrageous price to rent a small two bedroom. Thy were like, “We pay half what we were paying in rent, to own our beautiful home here in Danville.” They’re like, “I can’t believe, for being a smaller city, how much stuff there is to do all the time. And so, they’ve been here maybe five or six months, and they absolutely love it.
Rheanna Ollis stated that the idea behind “You Decide What’s Possible” is that the city provides what it can to its residents, but that the residents also do what they can for each other.
AUDIO: If your neighbor’s got weeds growing and it’s annoying you, and code enforcement can’t get out there very quickly; go help them out! You know, lend a hand and be that person to make yourself your community. Because we can’t make you your community. What we can do is serve you; and do everything else we can to make sure that you have a good quality of life; and things to offer like recreation or activities. But you have to make your neighborhood and your community what you want it to be.
