In a Dual Credit U.S. History class taught by Lori Woods, Schlarman Academy juniors were able to earn one credit of U.S. History for high school, and two semesters of college credit through Danville Area Community College. But first, they had to complete a special project, which was presented Wednesday morning (May 20th) in the Schlarman Academy North Chapel.

Fifteen students presented their research on 15 different Danville area World War II Veterans. As Lori Woods explained to CIMG after the program, this was more than just “go google something.”

AUDIO: History is really the everyday people when you talk about, especially, a big global event like World War II. But also, to teach them how to get off of the internet, and the ease of just pulling facts. And having to go did down deep someplace, and look at pictures, and look at scrapbooks. And actually read an old newspaper to see what information is there. And to build a story, where there’s not a lot of written research yet about someone.

Woods credited the Vermilion County Museum and Danville Public Library with providing much of what the students needed for their research. Also present at the program were Adam Shores and Jeff Knapp from the American Legion Post 210 Honor Guard.
