DANVILLE — The city was unsuccessful in enticing Hyster-Yale Materials Handing — with its more than 200 jobs — to stay in the community, but it did succeed in obtaining a state site readiness grant for a future development opportunity at West Newell Road and Bowman Avenue.
Last week in Urbana, Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced Regional Site Readiness Program awards totaling $35 million to support site readiness activities at 22 sites across the state.
Danville was awarded a $1.371 million grant, for sewer infrastructure expansion, to serve the 50-acre industrial site at West Newell and Bowman.
The city had applied for up to $1.75 million, with an approximately $350,000 city match required, from the DCEO program for the sanitary-sewer infrastructure extension.
The expansion was originally intended as part of an incentive package for Hyster-Yale, in the hope that it would simply transition to a different site still in Danville, according to Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr.
But the Hyster-Yale Group chose to relocate to Indiana, leading to the planned closure of its local operations by the end of this year.
