A scheduled Thursday (July 18th) morning meeting between City of Danville and Vermilion County personnel could lead to a proposed intergovernmental agreement for the joint tear down of Danville’s Bresee Tower; and the contiguous Vermilion County Court Annex Building.
The effort to save both entities money by doing the projects together has been happening for a while. Vermilion County Board Chairman Larry Baughn says when Danville’s Corporation Counsel Office and Vermilion County’s State’s Attorney Office and other attending officials adjourn this meeting; the next step will hopefully be discussing the proposal in both City Council and County Board committees.
AUDIO: The city team and county team have met a couple of times here very recently, and have been going over boarding and verbiage for the intergovernmental agreement. And hopefully, it will all be in place very soon.
Danville’s Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr would like to see a proposed agreement in front of the Public Works Committee very soon, followed by in front of the full City Council. The mayor describes what would be in the document.
AUDIO: We will be agreeing on an intergovernmental agreement that will spell out the terms of how we’re going to go out to bid, who’s going to be responsible for overseeing the project; once it’s done, who owns the property, how the contractors are paid; that kind of thing. So, all those are terms that will be included in this intergovernmental agreement.
Mayor Williams says once the project goes out to bid, he expects asbestos removal to be the first major project on the list. He says it’s possible for that to happen during the fall, and the actual tear down to perhaps happen next spring. Mayor Williams also says whomever wins the bid for the project would either handle asbestos removal on their own, or find a subcontractor to take care of it.
