As we wait for the snow to melt from the storm that came two weekends ago, Danville Director of Public Works Dave Ruwe says things are in pretty good shape for any more snow this winter. ONE….new plow drivers have picked up some valuable experience. AND TWO….even though Danville has received its full allocation of salt deliveries, the salt dome remains full.
And speaking of salt, it was indeed too cold during most of the recent storm to use pure salt to melt the snow at first. But as Ruwe explains; they went to Plan B, which is the “grit mixture” involving both salt and sand.

AUDIO: Anytime we throw out the grit, which is that sand mixture, it also has salt mixed in it. And so, when the sun pops out, even though the temperatures still might be too cold, the sun actually helps activate salt, and helps that burn off.
Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr says whether Danville Public Works uses pure salt or the grit mix, he would put his team in the ring anytime.
AUDIO: I can tell you that in recent times I have traveled to Indianapolis, Crawfordsville, and Champaign-Urbana. And I would put our snowplow guys and gals up against anyone. They do a heck of a job.
Much melting is expected early next week, with higher temperatures in the forecast.
