THE FOLLOWING IS A VERMILION COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER RELEASE
March 13, 2026 – On March 2nd, our shelter assisted with a heartbreaking situation after a local resident passed away, leaving 20 Chihuahua mixes living in a one-bedroom apartment. Situations like this can quickly become overwhelming, and these terrified, tiny dogs needed help fast.
Thanks to the incredible work of a family member and our Animal Control officers, staff, and interns, the dogs were quickly brought to safety. They were given intake exams and medical care, safe individual housing, started on behavior plans, and networked to rescue organizations.
We are so grateful for our specialized rescue partners, who took in every single one of these dogs within 5 short days. They’ll receive medical and behavioral care, decompression time, and the chance to find loving homes.

This situation also reminds us why spaying and neutering pets is so important. Even in loving homes, when animals reproduce without limits, the number can quickly grow beyond what one person can manage. Although you may only have one pet, now is the time to spay or neuter at your veterinarian or using our low-cost service here: https://www.vercounty.org/animal-shelter/spay-and-neuter/<https://www.vercounty.org/animal-shelter/spay-and-neuter/>

To our community… thank you for supporting responsible pet ownership and for caring about animals who need a fresh start ❤️.
