THE FOLLOWING IS A DANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASE
On August 30, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of North Vermilion Street in Danville following a report of a domestic disturbance during which shots were reportedly fired.
Upon arrival, officers conducted an investigation into the incident. Officers located evidence of the shooting and recovered a firearm.
The suspect was identified as Jonathan Portugal, 22, of Danville. Portugal was located shortly after 10:00 p.m. in the 800 block of Lynch Drive and was arrested.
Portugal was transported to the Vermilion County Jail and booked on the following charges:
-Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm
-Aggravated Assault – Deadly Weapon
-Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon
-Possession of Firearm with Defaced Serial Number
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details will be released at this time.
All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
