On a beautiful day, on the lawn just south of Danville Area Community College’s Prairie Hall, a bur oak tree was planted in memory of State Senator Scott Bennett. It has been nine months since his sudden passing last December, and so many memories were shared at Wednesday morning’s ceremony; including by his brother, Robert Bennett.
AUDIO: I can think of no place more fitting for the first publicly planted tree to celebrate my brother. And on behalf of my family I want to thank everyone for this touching gesture.

Robert was followed by Scott’s Uncle, State Senator Tom Bennett
AUDIO: He would love the idea of a tree. It’s all about change. It’s all about growth and adjustment along the way. Education; wow; growth in all of its forms were important to Scott.

Tom was followed by Illinois Senate president Don Harmon.
AUDIO: For decades to come this tree will grow, its branches will spread, and it will become embedded in this great campus, perhaps offering shelter and shade to those who pass by. And in doing so, Scott’s legacy will live on.

And then, some words from Governor J.B. Pritzker.
AUDIO: He paved the way for so many people to have great futures. And with the dedication of the bur oak, Scott’s spirit will be here on this campus, looking over DACC students every time they walk around the campus. One day this tree, I’m told, can stand over 100 feet tall; like Scott Bennett’s integrity and his big heart.
Prior to the ceremony, DACC’s Dr. Stephen Nacco told us that it was wonderful to have Governor Pritzker there; as Senator Bennett’s strong loyalty to education, is matched by the governor’s.
AUDIO: He really has throughout the state revolutionized the way we are in higher education. He is totally committed to us. And as evidence of that; you have Senator Faraci, who helped organized this thing with us, so he also is so committed. And Scott Bennett certainly was.
Neuhoff media was also able to talk with Scott Bennett’s successor in the Senate, Paul Faraci; along with his friend across the aisle and in the other chamber, State Rep Mike Marron.
AUDIO (Faraci): Anyone that knew Senator Bennett knew that he cared deeply about our community, and about the community college; and about the workforce. And so planting a tree in his behalf is really a special moment for all of us.
AUDIO (Marron): A fitting tribune to a great man that we all miss a lot. Thank you to Governor Pritzker and to the Senate president for being here for a very special occasion.
