Twenty-two year old Jaylin J. Butler of Hoopeston has been ordered held in the Vermilion County jail prior to trial, after his arrest on multiple charges following the September 26th auto accident at Gilbert and Voorhees that resulted in the death of 74-year-old William Marietta of Danville.
Thursday (Oct 19th) morning’s detention hearing was necessary due to the SAFE-T ACT provision that eliminated cash bail in Illinois. It was ruled that Butler has met qualifying offenses, under the SAFE-T ACT, to be held prior to trial.
Charges Butler is facing as a result of the September 26th incident include Reckless Homicide, Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Aggravated Battery, Armed Violence, and Felon in Possession of a Weapon.
Police reported that they began pursuing Butler on September 26th in the area of Bowman and Fairchild, after recognizing him as someone driving without a license. It was reported that at some time during pursuit, Butler threw a handgun out the window; and ignored stop signs and the stop light at Voorhees and North Vermilion, continuing west on Voorhees until the collision at Gilbert that took William Marietta’s life.
Butler’s next court date for this case is November 13th at 2:30 PM.
