A special program coming to the Kennekuk County Park Education Center just might be the first of more to come. Vermilion County Conservation District Environmental Education Supervisor Laura Danzl says that for the first time, the district was contacted by the Illinois Natural History Survey, wanting to host a workshop in Vermilion County on freshwater mussels. Danzl says the response has been so positive that some are asking for another session in the future, either in the evening hours or over the weekend. Danzl says research biology scientists will be discussing the importance of freshwater mussels to our environment; along with mussels that can be found right along the Vermilion River basins.
AUDIO: You know mussels are one of those organisms that can determine how well the quality of a stream is. The more mussels you have in your habitat, the better quality water that you have. Mussels are great at like filtering out pollution and sediment.
If you’d like to attend the Tuesday, February 13th 10 AM to 12 Noon session at the Kennekuk Education Center, please RSVP at go.illinois.edu/MusselTalk.
