THE FOLLOWING IS A TAPS ON TUESDAY / VERMILION COUNTY WAR MUSEUM RELEASE
The third season of “Taps on Tuesday” begins on the day after Memorial Day, May 28th and will continue weekly through the Tuesday following Labor Day, which is September 3rd.
This year, the weekly programs at 6:00 p.m. will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery’s Soldiers Circle. Taps on Tuesday group member, Tara Auter said, “Since we’re in the Land of Lincoln, our first program again this year will feature the reading of the “Gettysburg Address.” Each program will contain historic and/or patriotic readings or songs, and a presentation about one or more of the veterans buried in the Soldiers Circle or elsewhere in the Cemetery. And that will be followed by the sounding of “Taps.” We’ve had really good attendance our first two years, and we invite the public to bring their lawn chairs and join us again this year at Spring Hill.”
The events are presented by the Vermilion County War Museum Society and the Ward Hill Lamon Civil War Roundtable. Larry Weatherford is President of both groups and has participated in the “One Hundred Nights of Taps” events in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and started “Taps on Tuesday” in Danville. He said, “We felt that the Soldiers Circle at Spring Hill was the ideal place to hold the programs. The cemetery has one hundred sixty-years of history, with literally thousands of veterans from as far back as the Revolutionary War buried throughout the cemetery. So, each time “Taps” will sound, the twenty-four notes will ring out over the graves of those who have served our country in war and peace. The sound of “Taps” seems to touch people deeply. There’s just something about it that evokes emotions and memories. It makes you stop to listen, honor and remember.”
The core team for the “Taps on Tuesday” programs includes Tara Auter, Greg Green, Susan Miceli-Green, Amanda and Vince Staub, J.C. Switzer, Larry and Rhea Weatherford and Becky and Alan Woodrum. Guest vocalists and speakers will participate in the programs over the course of the summer.
