Danville Police Chief Christopher Yates recently appeared with Laura Williams on 1490 WDAN’s Community Connection program. Yates has now been chief for nearly five years, and says; sure, there are certain numbers and improvements to be happy about. One is going from 12 gun homicide deaths in 2018 to one in 2023. But the chief also says that when it comes to improving the quality of life for all Danville residents, the police department should never be satisfied, and never consider its job done.
AUDIO: Our community wanted us to focus on violent crime and the reduction of that. Are we there yet? No, absolutely not. We’ll never reach our final goal of zero, okay? We should fight as hard as we possibly can to get as close to that as possible. I think every community shares that goal, or that wish.
As for the new Danville Police and Community Training Center, at 1155 East Voorhees in the back of the Public Works building, Chief Yates says one of the best things with that will be sharing the training center with both residents and other entities.
AUDIO: To where we can offer training, to not just our department, but other departments in this area. Whether it be in Vermilion County, or other counties, or even Indiana. Those departments that we often work with through mutual aid. It’s going to provide them any assistance that they may need, and also we can train together to where we understand each other.
Chief Yates says the new training facility provides classroom, hands-on training, and virtual reality. One upcoming event there will be the Danville Citizens Police Academy, set to begin April 25th.
