Despite very little trouble remaining with that mysterious dog respiratory disease they battled for a long white, big time challenges remain at the Vermilion County Animal Shelter. Director Kasey Snyder says the latest obstacle was a late shipment of food that did not arrive until the middle of this past week. But now it’s there, and the meantime substantial donations of pet food were made to the shelter in the meantime.
Now, however, there remains the question of space. Snyder says surrenders of pets is way up. And while the right thing to do is call the animal shelter if you have a dog, cat, or pet you no longer want; after that it’s a matter of finding them a new home. As Snyder explained to Neuhoff Media Friday (March 28th) afternoon, they just keep coming in.
AUDIO: We are over capacity. Every dog kennel we have, plus some, is full. We’ve gotten in just in the last 24 hours, I think; let’s see, two pregnant dogs, two litters of puppies; and then just some other, just random dogs. So I think we’ve gotten almost 20 dogs in the last couple days.
Anyone interested in adopting a pet or providing foster care for a pet may call the shelter at 217-431-2660, or stop by at 14775 Catlin Tilton Road in Danville. On the positive side, Snyder says only about three or four dogs are still battling the respiratory illness, and perhaps during the next month a decision will come from the Vermilion County Board on which option to choose for the future of the shelter. Those options, put forth by an animal shelter planner out of Arlington, Texas; include building a brand new shelter, as well as building a partial brand new shelter.
