News story here.
Nearly one week after the announced closing of Danville’s Quaker Oats plant, the “circle the wagons” group effort to help over 500 people move on with their lives continues. Vermilion County Works’ Director Chuck Jones says they had already planned to have another Career Expo, like last year’s at the David S. Palmer Arena put on by Vermilion Advantage and DACC’s Business and Technology Department. And now, with so many needing new jobs, the timing is perfect.
AUDIO: We’re going to have a lot of employers there who will be wanting to talk to people who are interested in all sorts of positions. A lot of agencies out there will be talking about what kinds of services they can offer individuals. And we also plan on having our Mobile Resource Room there, where we’ll actually bring some equipment over to the arena. And individuals can get on their e-mail, print out resumes; instead of having to come to our office to do it.

The David S. Palmer Arena will be the site for a Career Expo; 9 AM to 3 PM on Wednesday, April 24th.
That will be Wednesday, April 24th, 9 to 3 at the Palmer Arena. Jones says he’s seen it many times where a plant closes and the common refrain is “I can’t go to classes for re-training on something new. It’s not for me, I won’t fit in.” But Jones says; try it, take some re-training classes at DACC; because it very much is for you, and for both the younger and older.
AUDIO: You’re not going to be in classrooms, necessarily, with a bunch of 18-year-olds fresh out of high school. But you’re going to have people with all sorts of ages, and all sorts of backgrounds. One of the really great things about community college education is that you get exposed to lots of different ages groups, lots of different backgrounds, that maybe you’ve never got to spend a lot of time with before.
And remember, Vermilion County Works can guide you to funding for re-training benefits. To learn more, go to VermilionCountyWorks.org, check out the Vermilion County Works Facebook page, stop by the office at 407 N. Franklin in Danville, or call 217-442-0296, ext 110.
