“A Republican Controlled House of Representatives left town On Recess with Bills to Pay, a Border to Secure, and Democracy to Defend” Vermilion County Chairs Press Release
Vermilion County, Danville, IL – The Illinois Democratic Chairs noted today “The Republican led U.S. Congress left Washington and went home without passing a budget for Fiscal Year 2024, without passing foreign aid funding to support our allies who are defending democracy, and without passing legislation securing our border or addressing immigration – which Republicans made contingent upon passing a foreign aid.”
The Vermilion County Illinois Democratic County Chair Mickensy Ellis-White released the following statement joining in their concerns:
The President and the American people need Congress to act. President Biden helped send a bi-partisan bill to Congress on border security and Ukraine and Israel defense funding. The Senate supported it, Republican Leader McConnell included. It was rejected out of hand by House Speaker Johnson at the urging of Trump who appears to enjoy the crisis. Problem solving is not high on the list of House Republicans this year. Their own people complain the Congress has done nothing. The ‘Do-Nothing’ House leadership of this Congress mirrors the 1948 Congress President Harry Truman battled with in his whistlestop campaign, famously beating Dewey despite the headlines. And the Republicans are imitating the isolationist Republicans pre-WWII when Hitler menaced all of Europe causing the death of millions. They failed to act until the Pearl Harbor attack. America does not need another Pearl Harbor or 9/11. We need a functioning House ready to act.
Taking a recess while the world is in turmoil, including our border is unconscionable. A solution was within reach and the Republicans dropped the ball. People have died in Ukraine as a result. A battle was lost. And still, they wait for Trump’s word rather than doing their duty. It is not the America of FDR, Harry Truman or JFK. The torch JFK spoke of must not be allowed to go out. Freedom and democracy will not go softly into that good night of Trump terror. Stop the insanity now. We will be amplifying this message on February 28th at Democratic Headquarters. We urge the County Board to adopt a resolution urging the House leadership to step up.
As said by the Illinois Democratic County Chairs in their press release, Stop the games. Get serious. Fix the problem. And get back to work.” Vermilion County would suggest STOP THE INSANITY NOW as well. Surely what they are doing meets the definition of insanity in the face of a crisis.
*NOTE: The federal government is operating under a continuing resolution until March 1st and March 8th, and the U.S. House of Representatives is on recess until February 25th. Does anyone think it was time to go on vacation?
