The area unemployment picture is showing a bump in the wrong direction from December to January. Numbers from the Illinois Department of Employment Security show Vermilion County’s jobless rate rising from 5.4% in December to 6.6% in January. Vermilion County’s rate stood at six percent flat in January of 2023.
The City of Danville’s unemployment rate increased from 6.3% in December to 7.3% in January. Danville’s rate was 6.3% in January of last year.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the latest numbers have not been seasonally adjusted.
Also in Vermilion County, total non-farm employment showed no change from January of 2023 to January of 2024. Looking at specific categories, Educational and Health Services were up by 300 jobs, and Leisure and Hospitality showed a gain of 100 jobs. But that was cancelled out by a 200 drop in Manufacturing jobs, a 100 drop in Wholesale Trade jobs, and a 100 drop in Government jobs.
